Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No (spoiler alert), it’s an Oakley Under-11s win!
Report by Nikki Potter
Oakley Under-11s faced Hook at their top-secret Rotherwick location on a balmy Jun’anuary Tuesday evening. Despite requiring one Sat Nav and one Google Maps attempt to find the venue, the team’s determination remained unwavering.
Although the coin toss result is unknown (I was still parking at this point), Oakley was up to bat first with our mighty eagle, Remi S, and Vivaan as the opening pair. They showcased excellent teamwork, managing to score singles off an intimidating bowler, with some fantastic calling capitalizing on missed balls by Hook’s wicketkeeper and fielders. Their performance kept us on the edge of our camping chairs, as they narrowly avoided being caught multiple times and took some daring runs. A lovely four by Remi saw Oakley off to a strong start against a tight field.
Next up were Dan S and Jacob, who wasn’t on the field for long, leaving Finlay to join Dan. After gaining a couple of runs, Dan was also dismissed by a very good ball. Declan, a last-minute addition to the team, stepped up next. Inspired by the thought of a half-time mini muffin (another spoiler alert: he had to wait until the end of the match), Declan demonstrated our batting prowess with beautiful placement around the field. Dan displayed great leadership by hitting a fantastic four but was eventually caught out, an unfortunate event given Hook’s lack of success at this point. Ethan, in his first match for the mighty Oaks, displayed nerves of steel against fierce bowling, gaining runs where he could and partnering with Declan, who hit some fantastic fours. The highlight of the day was their ‘shall we, shan’t we’ run – ultimately a ‘shan’t’ but a solid performance nonetheless.
Daniel C, also representing the Oaks for the first time, partnered with Ben S. Unfortunately, Ben was caught before he could get going but left the field in good spirits. George joined Daniel and managed a four and some good runs before being stumped out.
The parents tried not to look the boys in the eye during the tactical team talk, which, thankfully, was tamer than the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series. There was no time for a sugar fix before the boys were back on the field.
And this is where the magic happened.
Opening our bowling with a first wicket maiden over, Hrishant took not one, not two, but three wickets! It was a miraculous spectacle deserving of flashing lights at the Theatre of Scenes for all to marvel at. Dan C followed with few runs conceded, fantastic wicketkeeping by Ben, and an almost-wicket run-out by Jacob. With Hrishant and George taking the next couple of overs,
Hook struggled against our tight fielding and solid backing up by Finlay. Just when Hook thought they might settle into the game, we unleashed the pocket rocket, Dan S. His blink-and-you-miss-it bowling secured another two wickets. Jacob, Dan C, and Finlay each took a turn before Dan S returned to claim his third wicket. Ethan bowled with great stops by Ben and allowed few runs. Declan took the only caught-and-bowled of the game, and Remi executed a power throw at the stumps for an outstanding run-out. Our captain, Dan S, bowled the last over, taking two more wondrous wickets, leaving no doubt that Oakley had won!
Final Score: Oakley CC 80 – Hook 51
The boys exhibited great team spirit, constantly encouraging and celebrating each other’s successes. Muffins were FINALLY earned by all.
A Day to Remember
This match will be remembered for Hrishant’s spectacular first wicket maiden over, which set the tone for the rest of the game. His performance was nothing short of heroic and inspired the team to keep pushing. The combination of tight fielding, excellent wicketkeeping, and strategic bowling left Hook with no room to breathe.
Dan S’s leadership both with the bat and ball was another highlight. His ability to motivate the team and deliver under pressure was crucial to Oakley’s success. Declan’s last-minute addition proved to be a masterstroke, as his batting prowess added much-needed runs and stability.
Celebrating Success
After the match, the atmosphere was electric. The boys were thrilled with their performance, and the parents were equally proud. The camaraderie and sportsmanship displayed were a testament to the team’s spirit. Celebrations continued as muffins were finally distributed, a well-deserved reward for the boys’ hard work and dedication.
This victory not only adds to Oakley’s winning record but also boosts the team’s confidence for future matches. It was a game filled with excitement, skill, and unforgettable moments, leaving everyone eagerly anticipating the next encounter.
