Stand in skipper, Clive Welsman, was left ruing a day of missed chances as the first XI failed to defend a decent target of 209 against vistors Wherwell.
Batting first, Gerry Dique (92) and Dan Sumner (54) got the Oaks in a great position where they could go on to win the game, however, apart from a typically stoic 23 not-out from Steve Savage, the middle order collapsed as they went hard chasing the runs.
Ton Up: Dan Sumner and Gerry Dique put on another 100 plus stand
Wherwell cashed in early in their pursuit as Tom Holbrook battled against injury trying to re-produce his early season form and Clive Welsman also struggled a little. Clive made changes and brought Jimmy Bright and Mark Potter into the fray, with Potter smashing through the Wherwell attack in a devastating six-wicket spell.
With well over 50 still required with 8 wickets down, the Oaks were well in charge but dropped catches and an injury to spinner, Dan Sumner, allowed Wherwell back in the game and they scented an unlikely victory which came with an over and a half to spare.
There is a lot to think about regarding selection and perhaps this was an occasion when the Oaks needed their best 11 players on the field rather than mixing and matching with the second eleven.
With cricket, unfortunately, selection is always a nightmare and when it goes wrong, hindsight is a wonderful and frustrating thing.
Onwards and upwards.
Up the Oaks!
