A virtuoso performance by Oakley CC chairman Bob Lethaby, got Oakley off to a rousing indoor league start in front of a bumper crowd at Dummer tonight.
Batting first Oakley soon started piling on the runs with Bob’s former Colt player, Dan Sumner, playing the part of worthy assistant as he admired stroke making at its finest.
Bob didn’t take long to retire, providing the inspiration for others to go on and add to the score with Dan making 20 and Jack Brundle also retiring after a quick fire innings aided by some great running by excellent Colts player, Dan Jones.
There was still enough time for Bob to return to the crease and retire unbeaten on 39 in what, was without doubt, one of the finest indoor innings of the modern era.
Defending 148, Oakley soon got on top with a spectacular run out in the first over and thereafter the wickets started to tumble with Dan Jones being particularly accurate, slowing the run rate down and taking an important wicket aided by a fine catch by George Lethaby, the 18 year old who sits in the unenviable position of trying to emulate the greatness of his father.
Was Bob finished…good God of course he wasn’t, taking two wickets in two balls with a run-out and a caught behind, this was a man so hot he was about to burst into flames.
It was left to Alex Brundle (everybody Brundle) to secure the win with a wicket in the final over to secure maximum points and a great start to the season.
