With summer storms easing, the signs are positive for a full fixture list this weekend despite the threat of a light shower. For the first time in what seems like an eternity, all three teams are in action. A great availability list means the captains can approach their games in a positive mood.
First XI vs. Overton
The third and biggest B3400 Derby of the season promises to be far tighter than the second and third team fixtures, which were one-way traffic for The Oaks. However, the Overton First XI, having beaten two Oaks teams in the GJ Plate, will be a tough challenge in their own backyard tomorrow.
The Oaks, buoyed by a fine win versus Basingstoke last weekend, make just one change, with skiddy medium-pacer Sharan Hugar replacing the unavailable Greg Spires. If the boys can build on last week’s excellent all-round performance at Oakley Park, this should be a cracker.
Second XI vs. Ramsdell II
The Seconds have been flying in recent weeks and are pushing the top two all the way in the promotion race. Availability is great despite missing the honeymooning skipper Ian Bennett, and stand-in skipper George Lethaby is happy with his team.
The Rams have been showing decent form lately, so The Oaks will need to be on top of their game. With excellent batting and bowling options, they should be well-prepared. If in-form Kris Tucknott and Tom Hartgill can deliver something for the middle order and long tail to work with, a good total is within reach.
George has a host of variable bowling options to work with, and if they can stay accurate, they will certainly cause problems. No excuses, as this is a good side that should maintain its upward push. However, complacency can undo the very best teams in sport, so they need to be fully focused.
Twyford II vs. Oakley 3s
After several weeks off due to either bad weather or no fixture, Dan and his merry band of brothers are just glad to get a game. Dan has put together a good team, and provided they can remember how to play, they should be competitive.
It’s the batting that has stopped a decent season from being a great one. Dan has been in fantastic form, with JT also contributing, but the more-than-capable upper and middle-order have struggled. The youngsters are still learning to bat in the longer form of the game, but it would be great to see some double-figure scores in the final games.
Bowling has never really been a problem, with Dave Bowers, Will McCarthy, and the excellent Joby Beatty consistently delivering the goods, while Dan is always good at keeping the fielders keen. With a mid-table placing secured, it’s a great time for the players to relax and express themselves without pressure.
Whatever the case, let’s hope the showers miss us and we can, at last, complete a full fixture schedule.
