New Captain-James Bayliss

After a close vote on Monday evening, Oakley Cricket Club have a new club captain. With 43 votes in, James Bayliss won by 7. James fought off competition from Dan Jones and Ian Bennett, who both polled well. DJ becomes vice captain with Ian lined up as 20/20 skipper.

Departing as captain is Alex Brundle, who is moving into the role of organising fixtures and events. AB came in as an emergency skipper two years ago and was dealt an early blow, losing three key players. We battled hard against County 2 relegation but didn’t quite do enough.

A return to County 3 saw us well in the hunt for promotion before we faded away in the final third of the season. Hampered by a back injury, Alex struggled for form and decided to stand down to concentrate on fitness and form so he can be ready for next season.

James is already getting plans in place and has informed all members there are positions up for grabs. He wants to implement more structured training and expects first team players to work hard for their spot in the team.

It feels like a good time for a new skipper. The club is in a stable and harmonious state and ready for new momentum. We have good players who are still improving, some excellent youngsters coming through, and the benefit of several members who have been Oaks as men and boys. It is also great place for new members to be part of.

Most importantly of all, James has great support from all members, which is  vital if we are going to succeed.

On we travel.
